Welsh Champs update from Darren Andrews  Mixed bag at the Welsh champs, I was 10% down on 3 events but Ash was good won the A string U20 hammer (I won b string hammer seniors). He did a new pb club record in the shot by about 6cms and his discus was about 10 cms short of pb. We were tired from the U20 AAA's Bedford Saturday (where Ash had his forest vest on). Ash came 10th against much older opposition but has another two years at U20 so that should be good in the future. Its English Schools, the next biggy for Ash then more Welsh league the day after! Never Ends Dave!!

I'm doing the Welsh Masters champs on 2nd August Cardiff and I've qualified for four events; Hammer, discus, shot and 100m!!!

Avon Track & Field League

The Juniors are at it again!

Full results should be available next week but one of the most exciting races of the day was the U13 girls 800mts. Sadie Melhuish went off at a cracking pace. By half way she was almost 20 mts clear. That lead was gradually whittled away. By the finish there was little more than a piece of paper between them. The club had 3 other runners in the race. Fen Madley who is better suited to a bit longer and Emily Dowle and Laura Taylor who will still be in this age group next year. Jamie Gough was making his first appearance for the club and one the U11s High Jump. The girls U13 relay team also provided a highlight all coming from the younger age group. They produced some very mature baton passing to finish a close 2nd. Another relay star in the making was Sam Wallis another making his first appearance for the club. Sam proved the baton has the ability to make you run faster than you think you can.

Hereford 5km and Dymock half marathon update

The Girls are Back in Town!

Hereford 5K Final

Five FODAC ladies competed in the final Hereford Leisure Centre 5K race on 5th June and claimed the team series prize.  On a very hot evening the runners had mixed fortunes with Denise Rees (23.27) and Lynne Park (23.36) being slightly slower than the last race, while Vicki Morgan (23.43), Jackie Green (24.21) and Jenny Green (24.53) all improved.

Pictured with their team and individual trophies are Lynne Park (4th lady overall), Denise Rees and Vicki Morgan, 1st V35 in the series.

Unfortunately Freek van Arkel was away on a school trip and so was unable to compete at Hereford and so claim his series prize.  However, in the recent Globe 5k race Freek set a new club U17 record with a time of 16.44.

Dymock Half Marathon

A trio of Forest of Dean ladies recently took part in the undulating and challenging Dymock Half Marathon. Kim Mazzucca was first lady home and 1st vet 45 in 1hr 25.12, an impressive time given the very hot weather conditions.  This set a new course record, taking almost 2 minutes off the previous record set by England international Angie Saddler.  Good runs from team members Nikki Marshall, who broke the 2-hour barrier and Aileen Griffiths only a few minutes behind, ensured ladies team victory.

Tony Marshall ran in a time of 1hr 22.17 taking 3rd male and 1st vet honours, whilst Peter Short also put in a good performance in 1hr 37.39.  Only three days later Kim gained another victory in the first of the Quedgeley Gloucester 5 Mile Series, in a time of 30 mins 42 secs.

Hereford 5Km

Nine FODAC athletes turned out on a miserable, wet evening for the second of the Hereford Leisure Centre 5km race on the 14th May.  The club’s glory belonged to the two U17 men who competed, with Freek van Arkel (U17) putting in an outstanding performance to finish 3rd in 17:24 which was 15 seconds faster than the first race held a couple of weeks previously.  For full report click here.

Endurance training day report

Sunday 17th May

A large number of club coaches, seniors and juniors attended a day’s training session given by Mark Brace, South West Endurance Coach.  Mark’s brief was to provide a course which covered ways that runners of varying abilities could train together.  Coaches and athletes alike went home inspired to put into practice what they had learned during the course of a very informative day, which covered everything from different types of training sessions, nutrition, drills and race targeting and planning.

Many thanks to Dave Lucas for arranging this session.

Ashley throws his way into the England schools Athletic Championship U20 athlete Ashley Andrews has thrown his way into the English Schools Athletic Championships. He produced a huge lifetime best distance of 48.76 metres with the 6kg hammer at Newquay and Par AC on 26th April 2009. This also places Ashley top of the Wales U20 rankings and must surely cement his place in the Welsh Athletics squad. Ashley (17), a Wyedean Comprehensive student who was born in Wales but lives in Gloucestershire is coached by Hammer legend and British pioneer of the art of throwing, Lorraine Shaw. Lorraine is a former Commonwealth champion and current Brirish record holder for the womens hammer (68.93m) and coaches a significant number of other talented gloucestershire athletes along with international throwers. Ashley continues to train hard for six days a week and looks forward to breaking through the 50 metre barrier with his hammer throwing this season.
Fiona Turner is trying to get a couple of teams together for the Cotswold relay on the 27th June please contact Fiona if you are interested.

The local fixtures page has also been added to if you are looking for race inspiration click here.
